Man in critical condition following ATV accident
A Cape Coral man remained hospitalized Tuesday after losing control of an ATV and crashing.
Andrew Casey Baldwin, 33, of 2223 S.W. 50th Lane, was listed in critical condition at Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was taken Sunday following the single-vehicle accident in the southwest Cape.
At 6:55 p.m., Baldwin was headed west on Southwest 50th Lane on a Yamaha ATV in a residential neighborhood. According to police, he accelerated rapidly to at least 30 mph in the 2300 block and lost control of the vehicle. The ATV veered left, turned sideways and hit a mailbox.
The ATV rolled over and Baldwin struck the driveway of 2316 S.W. 50th Lane with his head. The vehicle then continued westbound, where he and it struck a palm tree before coming to a stop.
Baldwin was located against the tree with the ATV on top of him, police reported.
He sustained life-threatening injuries and was trauma-alerted to the hospital in a Medstar helicopter. According to officials, hospital staff advised that Baldwin had massive head and internal injuries.
He reportedly was not wearing any safety gear at the time of the accident.
Police reported that alcohol was a factor. Baldwin had a blood alcohol level of 0.340.
The investigation is ongoing.
