‘Atocha’ coins to be featured at Cape Coral Historical Museum
The famous Mel Fisher “Atocha” coins recovered from the shipwrecked “Neustra Senora de Atocha, a Spanish galleon that was carrying gold and silver coins and bars from the new world to Spain in 1622, are coming to the Cape Coral Historical Museum, Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, for one day only.
On Sept. 6, 1622, the “Atocha” was sunk by a hurricane while sailing near the Florida Keys. Fishers salvage company, Treasure Salvors, retrieved these authentic coins along with other memorabilia which will be displayed at the museum. Attendees will have the opportunity to talk to Walter Dahlmann, a former diver with the Mel Fisher company
Through the generosity of long-time Cape Coral resident and former director of Treasure Salvors Inc., Lou Tilley, now deceased, the museum is able to share a part of history with the general public.
Prior to and following viewing the coin display, a very informative DVD will be shown which will give an exciting overview of the actual discovery of the sunken treasure. The coin display will start at 10 a.m., Saturday only. at the Cape Coral Historical Museum, 544 Cultural Park Blvd., closing at 4 p.m.
Admission to the coin display will be $5 per person, which will include a tour of the three museum buildings.
