Cape police: Alcohol a factor in fatal crash
An investigation into a crash that killed the driver and critically injured another is done.
The Cape Coral Police Department reported Wednesday that traffic homicide investigators have concluded the investigation into the Sept. 7 accident in the 5600 block of Rose Garden Road. Police found that the driver, Patrick Logue, had a blood alcohol content of 0.198 at the time of the crash.
Logue, 56, of the Cape, and Susan C. Reynolds, 29, of 2903 W. 52nd St., Lehigh Acres, were headed eastbound on Rose Garden Road North in a sports car. At 12:23 a.m., Logue lost control of the vehicle where the road curved, and the car spun around and entered the center median, according to officials.
The vehicle crashed rear end first into a palm tree and caught on fire.
Reynolds was able to get out of the car and was dragged away from it by witnesses on scene.
Logue was unable to escape the vehicle and was pronounced dead on scene.
Witnesses on scene reported hearing screeching tires, then the impact. One man told police that he observed the driver of the vehicle appear to lose control on the bend, just prior to the accident.
Reynolds reportedly sustained life-threatening injuries, with burns over more than 65 percent of her body. She was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital, then trauma-alerted to Tampa General Hospital.
As of Thursday, Reynolds had been discharged from the hospital.
Logue and the vehicle were unidentifiable immediately following the crash. The Medical Examiner’s Office positively identified him days later.
The investigation revealed that he died as a result of the vehicle fire, officials reported.
