Walk for the Fallen Benefit at Sandy Parrot

3 min read

Those wanting to help the families of law enforcement officers who die in the line of duty have that opportunity by supporting the Walk for the Fallen effort of Lee County Sheriff’s Sgt. David Drum. The Walk for the Fallen is an ambitious effort to raise awareness and funds for these families. The Sandy Parrot brings its blend of music, food and fun as it hosts this event on Friday, April 13, from 8 p.m. until midnight.

The night will feature high energy dance music with Fort Myers’ well known Alter Ego band. The fundraiser will offer a 50/50 drawing and more than 25 fabulous raffle items, among them a stay at Diamondhead Resort, tickets to next season’s Barbara B. Mann Performance Hall, and much more. The Sandy Parrot has agreed to match the fundraising, dollar for dollar, up to $3,000 dollars. Also on tap, the Sandy Parrot’s great beverage selection, delicious meals and snacks. The evening’s dinner special will be slow roasted Prime Rib, including sides.

2011 saw a tragic increase in violence toward officers across the country with 177 officers killed in the line of duty, including 14 in Florida, the highest in the nation. In its wake, the violence left behind 265 children, some too young to have a memory of their fallen parent.

Drum plans to raise the money one step at a time, by walking and running the 390 miles from Fort Myers to the State Capitol Building in Tallahassee. The pledges Drum receives during his Walk for the Fallen go directly to Concerns of Police Survivors, an organization helping the children and families of fallen officers through grief counseling, scholarship opportunities and much more.

“Citizens can step up and become heroes to these families by sponsoring and supporting C.O.P.S. and the Walk for the Fallen. C.O.P.S. is a great, well run organization, with an impressive percentage of its donations going directly to their programs,” stated Drum in a prepared statement. “Our goal is to raise $100 for each mile from the Sheriff’s office to the State Capitol. I value the support of the Sandy Parrot and their generous fund matching offer. I look forward to seeing you there on Friday.”

Drum’s Walk for the Fallen journey departs from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, 14750 Six Mile Cypress Parkway, on April 25 at 7 a.m. and will arrive at the State Capitol on May 4.
