A Cape Coral man and another person were killed Thursday night in a single-vehicle accident that left the other passengers with minor injuries.

Johnson Atilard, 25, of the Cape, and Daniel Huerta, 17, of Bonita Springs, were pronounced dead at Physicians Regional Medical Center, where the two were taken after their vehicle veered off the road into a canal with water.

According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, Atilard was driving north on County Road 837 in a Ford Expedition when he approached a right curve in the road, located approximately three miles west of CR 839.

FHP reported that Atilard failed to negotiate the curve, and the SUV veered off of the road. The left side of the vehicle collided with a traffic sign before it overturned into a canal. It came to a rest on its roof, partially submerged.

There were six other passengers in the SUV at the time. They were:

– Luis Lopez-Meza, 18, of Miami Gardens

– Deandre Reese, 15, of Sarasota

– Mikeis Williams, 17, of Royal Palm Beach

– Dave Elysse, 15, of Florida City

– Joseph Wilson, 16, of Bonita Springs

– Jessie Freeman, 14, of Lehigh Acres

All six were transported to Physicans Regional Medical Center with non-incapacitating injuries. Their conditions were unknown Friday evening.
