Driver still critical following single-car crash
A weekend traffic accident that killed one Cape Coral man and left another one in critical condition remained under investigation Wednesday.
Wagner Juste, 29, of 2418 N.W. 21st Ave., died Sunday morning when the 2002 Jaguar that he was riding in drove off of the roadway and crashed into a wooden power pole. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead.
The driver, Geoffrey Glover, 21, also of 2418 N.W. 21st Ave., sustained severe injuries in the crash and was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital.
Glover remained hospitalized in critical condition as of Wednesday.
According to the Cape police, at 1:23 a.m. Sunday the Jaguar was traveling westbound on Kismet Parkway at a high rate of speed from the intersection at Chiquita Boulevard when the car veered to the left for unknown reasons.
The Jaguar rotated, exiting the south side of the roadway and entering an empty lot. The car struck a road sign then the power pole, snapping the pole. The Jaguar came to a stop on its passenger’s side, held in place by the pole.
Police reported that due to the extensive crush damage to the passenger’s side and the roof, and the intrusion into the interior of the Jaguar, both men were pinned into the car. Emergency responders had to extricate both men.
Glover, who was conscious, was transported to the hospital.
Juste was pronounced dead on scene by Lee County EMS.
“Based on observations on the scene, officers responded to Lee Memorial Hospital to assist with a DUI investigation,” Lt. Tony Sizemore reported in a prepared statement released.
The investigation was ongoing as of Wednesday.
