Cape High Key Club to volunteer at Sand sculpting competition
Members from the Cape Coral High School Key Club will provide a helping hand this weekend during the World Championship Sand Sculpting Competition on Fort Myers Beach.
Key Club President Robert Swanson said they will help with registration, parking, along with educating and collecting donations from individuals for the Eliminate Project. Eight members from the Cape High Key Club will provide a helping hand through today.
“There should be 13 other Key Clubs there, which makes up our Division 19,” Swanson said.
He said the Eliminate Project is a five-year plan teamed up with the Kiwanis Organization and UNICEF.
“The whole point is to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus,” Swanson said. “Every nine minutes a baby dies from it.”
He said there is an improper cutting of the umbilical cord and the mother and child become infected. The newborn suffers from repeated, painful convulsions and the mother suffers as well.
The Cape Coral High School Key Club have been raising money since April of 2010 for the Eliminate Project. Swanson said they have raised $1,300 so far.
To increase the amount they have raised the Key Club will be selling $2 bracelets during the competition on Saturday. A tent will be set up by the Holiday Inn on Fort Myers Beach.
“For every $1.80 we raise, it will go to save a mother and a child,” he said.
The $1.80 will pay for three vaccinations that will prevent maternal and neonatal tetanus.
“That is the full treatment,” Swanson said. The Key Club currently has 32 paid members who are active. Swanson said 18 of the members have 30 community service hours or more.
“We are still expanding,” he said. “It’s never to late to join Key Club. We are always looking for new members.”
