Number of 9-11 remembrance events on Saturday
There are many 9-11 events taking place today in Cape Coral and Fort Myers.
A Day of Remembrance will be hosted by the American Airlines Kiwi Club, Suncoast Chapter on Saturday, Sept. 11, at Rumrunners Restaurant in Cape Harbor to remember and honor all of the fallen.
The memorial service will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the police department, fire department and EMS personnel presenting the colors. The National Anthem will be sung, followed by the Lee County Civil Air Patrol Cadets leading those in attendance with the Pledge of Allegiance.
This year the speakers will include a former New York Police Department Detective, New York EMS and an individual directly involved with the New York Fire Department.
Members from the Cape Coral police and fire departments, Fort Myers Police, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Lee County EMS, U. S. Coast Guard, Harp and Thistle Pipes and Drums of Southwest Florida, members of the U.S. military as well as retired U.S. military officers, Civil Air Patrol Cadets and the Kiwanis Club of Cape Coral also will participate in the event.
There will be 300 white roses displayed in vases with a list of names and numbers of those who were lost on 9-11. Cadets will bring the roses down to the harbor and bag pipes will play “Amazing Grace” as everyone takes a rose for a special person and throws it into the water.
The white roses will be thrown to remember those who were on American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight 175, American Airlines Flight 77, American Airlines Flight 93, along with members of the New York Police Department, New York Fire Department and New York Port Authority Police.
Marine vessels will have their lights on in the harbor during the ceremony.

VFW Post 8463 will host a remembrance day at 11:30 a.m. today with the posting of colors by the Cape Coral Fire Department Honor Guard, a performance of the National Anthem, Amazing Grace, God Bless America and a wreath presentation.
Speakers for the ceremony include retired New York Firefighter Jim Raty, Assistant Fire Chief Tom Tomich, Cape Coral Police Chief Jay Murphy and retired New York city firefighter Joe Digregorio.
The VFW is at 4709 S.E. 11th Place.

The Lee Memorial Blood Center Bloodmobiles will be in two locations on Sept. 11 for a Day of Remembrance Blood Drive to honor those who died nine years ago.
Harley Davidson will have a bloodmobile for their “Biker, Blues and Barbeque” Day of Remembrance event. The event, which will take place from noon until 5 p.m., will kick off with a bike run in the morning.
There will be a heroes tribute from noon to 1 p.m., a rib cook off from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and raffles and live music.
Harley Davidson is at 2160 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers.
The second bloodmobile will be at the Lehigh Acres Wal-Mart, Wal-2523 Lee Blvd from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Also this weekend….
On Saturday, Sept. 11, Ariels New England Seafood and More will have an all day New England Fish Fry for $9.95, which also includes take-out to raise money for PFC Corey Kent. Ariels will donate $5 of every meal sold to Kent and his family.
Sunday will feature the “Hot Chili Rods” car show from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., a 50/50 raffle and silent auction from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., a car wash from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., a poker run at 12:30 p.m., and the Calendar Girls from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.
From 1 to 3 p.m. the Pesidente Girls will be selling beer and signing autographs. A lot of different places donated things that will be auctioned off during Sunday’s activities to raise funds for Kent.
Those who want to participate in the car show or poker run can just show up on Sunday. There is no charge for individuals to participate in the car show. A fee will be charged for the poker run, which will also be donated to the Kent family.
Other live entertainment will include Carol and Jim with Just Us Marshals, Chuck Noonan with Sunday Morning Madness, Johnny Ray, Rick Keeler and Reilly Art Works and Music from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m.
Mariner High School ROTC will volunteer their time for the car wash on Sunday.
