‘Huge Native Plant Sale’ this weekend
Cape Coral residents have the opportunity to purchase native plants during a huge sale at Rotary Park this weekend.
The local park has hosted a “Huge Native Plant Sale” every spring and summer since 2002. Those who attend the sale can purchase a native plant and get information on which plants to use in their own yards.
“We try to promote growing native plants,” said Honey Archey, an environmental recreation specialist with the city of Cape Coral. “They are more Florida friendly and are better for the environment.”
Invasive species such as the Brazilian pepper plant and melaleuca are damaging to local ecosystems. Archey said one major aim of the sale is to promote the growth of native plants, even though these items are often harder to find.
She said native plants are considered a specialty and that it’s difficult to locate them in a traditional gardening store. Yet, they are easier to grow in this climate and attract local wildlife.
“It’s better economically because you don’t have to use fertilizer or water nearly as much as plants that aren’t acclimated to this climate,” said Archey.
The plant sale will feature various vendors, including members of the local Coccoloba Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society. The society (www.fnpscoccoloba.org) meets twice a month to promote the growing of native plants.
Archey said the event usually has a large turnout. During the spring plant sale, she said it “was packed all day long.” Trees, plants, shrubs, flowers and grasses will be for sale, ranging from $5 to $40.
Experts in native plants will be available to answer questions on how to plant and maintain any of the plants for sale. Rotary Park’s butterfly garden and house will also be open to the public.
The sale is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, at Rotary Park at 5505 Rose Garden Road.
