Cape Coral crime drops 17.5 percent in mid-year UCR reports
Cape Coral’s crime rate dropped 17.5 percent in the first six months of 2010 compared to the first six months of 2009. According to the mid-year Uniform Crime Report statistics, the total number of Part I crimes decreased from 2,414 to 1,993. If this rate is maintained through the remainder of the year, the Cape’s Uniform Crime Rate (per 100,000 population) is estimated to decline from 2,912 in 2009 to 2,456 this year.
“While we realize this reflects only the first six months of the year, we are very encouraged to see a decrease in the number of serious crimes committed in Cape Coral this year,” said Acting Police Chief Jay Murphy. “Providing for the public safety of our citizens is our primary responsibility. Working in collaboration with our citizens, the community continues to experience a positive trend in crime reduction, and this allows the Cape to remain one of the safest cities in Florida.”
Every major crime category declined with the exception of sexual battery, which increased from seven in 2009 to 13 this year. Total violent crime dropped 16.6 percent from 181 in 2009 to 150 this year, while non-violent crime declined 17.5 percent from 2,233 to 1,843. One murder has been recorded this year compared to three last year. Robbery dropped to 38 this year compared to 56 in 2009. Aggravated assault, burglary and larceny all decreased by 15 percent, 17 percent and 16 percent, respectively.
