Yacht Club Sprint Triathlon set for May 15

2 min read

The Cape Coral Yacht Club’s Sprint Triathlon returns this month, back from a year-long hiatus for a second go-round.
Organizer and Recreation Specialist Mark Hunter said the event attracts athletes of all skill levels, from hardened Ironman-type competitors to casual health enthusiasts looking for a challenge.
“It’s all across the board,” Hunter said of the various competitors. “We have people who will do it very fast, and those who take their time. That’s the nice thing about it … to give people who have never done it before a chance to experience a triathlon.”
The event begins at 7 a.m. with a quarter mile swim off the Yacht Club beach, followed by a 12-mile bike ride, and concludes with a 5K run.
Hunter said he’s expecting athletes from as far as Sarasota to take part in the event.
He said some of the serious competitors treat the event as if it’s almost a training exercise for the more intense triathlons.
Those athletes will complete the course in under 90 minutes, he said, but speed is not the aim of this triathlon. It’s more about engaging the community and making sure people are living healthy, active lifestyles.
“We don’t have many of these events around here, and hopefully people will come out to support it,” Hunter said.
An awards ceremony and live music follow the event’s completion.
The cost is $45 per person, for adults 18 or older; $25 per person, for youth aged 10 – 17.
