Child struck by vehicle on Del Prado has died
A 13-year-old child who was struck by a car on Del Prado Boulevard Tuesday night while attempting to cross the roadway has died, officials said this morning.
Ryan Michael Santos, of 228 NE 16th Place, suffered life-threatening injuries when he was struck as he crossed southbound Del Prado south of Northeast 3rd Terrace on his bicycle, officials said. He was taken via trauma-alert to Lee Memorial Hospital where he died at 10:32 p.m., officials said.
The accident occurred in the 300 block of Del Prado Boulevard North at 7:15 p.m.
According to police, a 2007 Porsche driven by Aditi S. Nair, 19, of Bonita Springs, was traveling southbound on Del Prado in the middle lane approaching the intersection at Northeast 3rd Terrace. Ryan was on a bike perched in the cement center median heading westbound and waiting to cross the southbound lanes of Del Prado Boulevard.
According to witnesses, as Ryan attempted to cross the southbound lanes, he was struck in the center lane by Nair’s vehicle. The impact ejected Santos from his bicycle, and he hit the windshield of Nair’s car. The child landed behind the vehicle in the center lane.
Nair was not injured.
Ryan’s death is the city’s fourth traffic fatality in 2010. A traffic homicide investigation is being conducted.
