Monroe Street opens to through traffic
Monroe Street south to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard will open Tuesday at approximately 10 p.m.
This opening makes Monroe Street a through street. With only a handful of streets left to complete, the City of Fort Myers Downtown Utility and Streetscape project is quickly coming to an end. During this four-year project, existing water, sewer and storm drain systems have been replaced throughout downtown while the streets have been getting their own makeover.
Second Street from Monroe Street to Broadway is expected to open Friday night at approximately 11 p.m. Thompson Street and Lee Street will be the last two blocks to be completed this year.
Street furniture such as benches, and waste receptacles will soon be installed. Decorative bike racks placed throughout the downtown area will complete the street furnishings package.
This schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather and unforeseen underground conditions, etc.
