Commission OKs bus shelter funds

The Lee County Board of County Commissioners approved funding at Tuesday’s meeting for the Bus Shelter Program for fiscal year 2009-10.
The five-year installation project is 100 percent funded by the Federal Transit Administration. LeeTran developed the project for passengers who utilize the transit system.
“I can’t thank you enough,” Commissioner Ray Judah said.
He added that the program is a “tremendous accomplishment for this community — that we are going to provide the necessary shelter from inclement weather.”
Commissioner Brian Bigelow said he would like to see the shelters designated as smoke-free, with the appropriate signage to encourage smokers to keep the shelters smoke-free.
He said that if the county builds a semienclosed space, people should not be able to smoke there.
The budget amendment resolution allocated $1,055,028, which allows LeeTran to move forward with purchasing and installing 44 shelters, which will be completed in September.
There are five shelter locations completed. Another two locations are 100 percent designed, and six locations are 30 percent designed.
