A Cape Coral man accused in the strangulation death of his girlfriend has been returned to Lee County after fleeing to Ohio, where he was shot trying to elude police, according to officials.
Matthew Gullett, 29, charged with second-degree murder in the death of Shannon Sweet, 27, is being held without bond.
Gullett reportedly admitted to an unnamed police source that he strangled Sweet during an argument because she “just wouldn’t shut the (expletive) up.”
Police discovered Sweet’s body days after her death in an apartment adjoining the one the couple shared at 4921 Coronado Parkway after a neighbor reported a strong odor March 30.
Her body, found with a belt and pants wrapped around her neck, was located in a shower stall, covered with an air mattress, according to officials.
An arrest warrant was issued for Gullett and he was later detained by Muskingum County sheriff’s deputies at an Ohio hotel after being injured by gunfire when he attempted to escape capture, officials said.
He is in custody at the Lee County Jail.
