Sanibel Historical Museum and village welcomes new board member

The Sanibel Historical Museum and Village elected Sherry Halleran, who has been a volunteer with the museum for the last six years, to its board of directors last Monday.
As a docent for the museum, Halleran can be found in the Rutland House the majority of the time, educating guests on the Calusa Indians.
“When I’m here as a docent, I love getting to meet people from all over the world to see what brought them to the village and what brought them to Sanibel and learning about the Calusa Indians. It’s an extension of my learning being here at the village,” Halleran said.
Halleran will be working closely with other board members on planning events like Luminary and the “Let’s Get Historical” fundraiser which takes place March 15. Halleran said that over 600 people attended Luminary last year, making it their largest one yet.
She and her husband first started coming to Sanibel in the 1990s, then eventually purchased a house in 2000.
“We would come down and visit friends and loved it. Then, we would come down on spring breaks then we bought a house when we knew that this is where we wanted to be,” Halleran said.
Aside from volunteering at the museum, Halleran also devotes her time to BIG ARTS, where her husband Neal, is in charge of The Forum. She has co-chaired BIG ARTS’ annual benefit.
“I prepare the food and entertain the speakers when they’re here,” she said.
Halleran also volunteers at the Sanibel Congregational Church’s where she will be co-chairing its high tea and fashion show event.
“I’m so proud of them. They’ve kept it the standards to what I would have wanted,” she said.
