Clean water documentary to premier, mini concert to be held
A documentary exploring all aspects of Florida’s clean water issue will premiere Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m., at the Sanibel Community House.
The showing of the one-hour documentary will be followed by a mini-concert by Denny Sarokin, who composed “Sanibel,” recorded by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. He also sings the documentary’s opening title, “Legacy,” in the film.
Tickets are $20 and all proceeds go to the Sanibel-Captiva Chapter of Solutions to Avoid Red Tide, the program sponsor.
The documentary is produced by 7-time Emmy winner David E. Carter, and Larry Doyle, a 44-year veteran of CBS News, both full-time Sanibel residents.
Dr. Bruce Neill, president of the SanCap chapter of START, said that an important part of solving water quality issues in South Florida is to help people understand the challenges faced and the possible solutions that to solve them.
“David and Larry have done a masterful job capturing all angles of water issues in our region. We hope that as more people understand and appreciate the challenges ahead of us, they will be more motivated, and better informed to play an active part in the solutions.”
The film has been in process for five months, and includes interviews with more than 20 people representing all aspects of the issue, including: Mitch Hutchcraft, South Florida Water Management District; Mark Perry, Florida Oceanographic Society; Cris Costello, Sierra Club; Lt. Col. Jennifer Reynolds, US Army Corps of Engineers; Bubba Wade, vice president, US Sugar; Dave Shuldanfrei, realtor, Sanibel Island; Daniel Andrews, founder, Captains for Clean Water; Phillip Roland, mayor, City of Clewiston; Deborah Johnson, Everglades Foundation; James Evans, City of Sanibel, director of natural resources; Ralph Woodring, Sanibel businessman; Grant Kaimer, Sanibel middle school student; Rick Bartleson, PhD, SCCF research scientist and Bruce Neill, PhD, co-founder, Sanibel Sea School.
START, the film’s sponsor, is a 501c3 nonprofit organization and was founded in 1996 on Longboat Key, and has chapters in Lee County, Englewood and Manasota. START’s mission is “Preserving Our Coastal Waters.”
