Auditions to be held for ‘The Jungle Book’

Auditions are being held this weekend for youngsters 5 to 13 years old who would like to fill the cast of “The Jungle Book.”

“It has all of the (same) theme songs and same story line, so the kids won’t be disappointed,” Creative Theater Workshop Founder Michelle Hamstra said of the production. “I did it seven years ago. I loved the show. The movie just came out, so the kids are familiar with the story.”

The audition will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, at the Sanibel Community House, 2173 Periwinkle Way. Hamstra said alternate audition times can be made if that time frame does not work by calling (239) 738-3525.

Those interested in auditioning for the cast can visit www.ctw.life and sign up for their audition time.

The audition will include the youngsters singing 30 seconds of a song, as well as learning a short dance that uses simple movements.

Hamstra said for the youngsters who are new to theater, it does not matter if they perfect their singing because they will hold numerous workshops, one of which will include a dance workshop with a woman who used to be a Rockette.

The production includes 20 roles, as well as 10 children performing in the chorus.

“Rehearsals are Sunday afternoon, so parents can drop off their kids and have a nice lunch and come back,” Hamstra said.

The production will take the stage March 31, through April 7, at the Community House.

Last year, dialogue began with Hamstra and John Talmage, a board member of the Sanibel Community Association, about moving the performances to the newly renovated Community House. She said they are excited that the Sanibel Community House is sponsoring the production on their newly renovated stage.

“It will be a nice intimate atmosphere. We can do dinner theater, or maybe a dessert theater,” Hamstra said, adding that they are still trying to figure out the logistics.

Creative Theater Workshop is a nonprofit education theater company that began in 2006. Hamstra said they are always looking for sponsors for scholarships and costumes.
