2 min read

The 85th Master Gardener Lecture Series will be held on Monday, Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. at the Sanibel Library (our normal first Thursday of the month was changed due to a library sponsored event).

Our speaker is Shelly Redovan, deputy director of Lee County Mosquito Control.Sanibel has a long and unique history of mosquito control and Lee County has the responsibility and mission to monitor and manage mosquito issues on our island.

Ms. Redovan is a seasoned and respected scientist who has 34 years experience in managing mosquitos issues in Southwest Florida. (Twelve years as director of Charlotte County and 22 years in Lee County). Currently she is considered one of the country’s leading experts on mosquito issues.

Her presentations to this point have been to major medical groups and hospitals to give the medical practitioners accurate and up to the moment facts on the Zika issue. Because of Sanibel’s reputation of being well informed and well educated citizenry, she has consented to provide timely and scientifically accurate information to our group. As in the past 13 years, this lecture series continues to deal with the issues of our unique ecosystems.

Zika is a truly unique insect vectored virus because it is the only insect spread virus that causes devastating birth defects and life threatening effects on adults. It is also the only insect spread disease that can be transmitted sexually from either partner.

Ms. Redovan is an exceptional speaker with almost three decades of leadership in mosquito control in our area. Following her presentation, she will allow adequate time for questions from the audience.

The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited.
