Captiva Community Panel still discussing sewers, Captiva Drive
The Captiva Community Panel is still in discussion over sewers at the Oct. 11 meeting. The sewer committee has renamed themselves to the wastewater committee. As of last Tuesday, Pam Keyes, director of Lee County utilities is still in the works of writing a document to present to commissioners about waste water alternatives.
“That has been the status of this project for two or three months,” said Jay Brown, a Captiva Community Panel member.
A meeting was scheduled with Keyes, Ken Gooderham and Brown but it was canceled due to Hurricane Matthew. Their next meeting was scheduled Thursday, Oct. 13. Further information will be discussed during the next panel meeting on Nov. 8.
Many people in the community are concerned that changing the sewers could interfere with zoning.
“If we do something like this could we be inadvertently increasing incentives for the county to change zoning laws and allow more multi-story developments and so forth. Having heard that, I think the density issue goes beyond whatever implications the waste water study might have. We as a panel, we owe it to the community to try to look at whatever means we might have possible to make sure that we are able to enforce our existing zoning and nobody for whatever reason down the road can suggest projects to change zoning and create additional density on the island,” Brown said.
There were no further updates on Captiva Drive improvements.
During the meeting, Rene Milville, a Captiva Community Panel member brought to attention the grid strengthening project he worked on with LCEC last spring. The goal was to try to help the community from having to reset their computers so much.
“I do remember last summer I spoke with Tricia Dorn (from LCEC) and she told me what she’s going to do and she’s already looked at it but a lot of the switches, a lot of the boxes and substations have a lot of little errors and she first put the attention on that. There was a lot of housekeeping that was never done. I’ve noticed after that, we weren’t getting as near as many interruptions as we were getting before just from her cleaning,” Milville said.
Milville is to get in touch with LCEC again to look at more junction boxes. Dorn may also come give a report and give a report on what the reliability has been the last six months.
