‘Find Waldo in Sanibel, FL’ creates summertime fun for youngsters
For the first time since Candlewick Press kicked off “Find Waldo Local” five years ago, the fun scavenger hunt is coming to the island this summer for kiddos of all ages.
“It’s the first time we have been selected to participate,” MacIntosh Books and Paper Manager Rebecca Binkowski said. “We are really excited.”
Participation for the Find Waldo Local is extremely easy for anyone who wishes to join in on the community fun. Individuals need to pick up a “Find Waldo Local in Sanibel, FL” passport to participate, which will become available after June 15, at MacIntosh Books, located in Palm Ridge Place. The passport includes the names of the participating sites, such as Among the Flowers, On Island, The Pecking Order, the Sanibel Deli and the Sanibel Sweet Shoppe.
“We love doing anything with the kids and being a candy store it goes hand-in-hand,” Beth Musser, Sanibel Sweet Shoppe owner said. “We like to support local business activities.”
Binkowski said they are looking for seven more locations who would like to participate in the local fun.
When arriving at one of the locations, participants are tasked with the responsibility of finding Waldo, the character dressed in a striped red and white shirt with black-rimmed glasses, so they can have their passport stamped, or signed for each site. The search lasts throughout the month of July.
Those who collect stamps, or signatures from 20 businesses, or more will be entered into a grand prize drawing on July 31. This year the top prize is a six-volume deluxe set of Waldo books.
A deluxe prize pack drawing for five lucky winners is also apart of the summer fun for those who share a completed coloring sheet of Waldo on Instagram, using #ColorWaldoAndWin.
In the late 1980s, Martin Handford created Waldo, a character that readers had to find in various crowd scenes. The famous book, “Where’s Waldo?” has been translated into more than 30 languages with more than 65 million books in print.
MacIntosh Books and Paper is one of 250 independent bookstores selected this summer to participate in the event that is put on by Candlewick Press and American Booksellers Association.
