City of Sanibel welcomes new summer interns
The City of Sanibel welcomes three summer interns: Kenny DiBiase, Britton Garmager, and Porter Goss. DiBiase and Garmager will be interning for the city over the entire summer working on various projects, whereas Goss will be here two weeks as he completes his High School Independent Senior Project.
DiBiase is interning in the mayor’s office for the summer. One of his projects is with the Natural Resources Department to prepare an educational brochure on illicit water discharge. DiBiase explained that the reason he wanted to intern at the City of Sanibel was “in order to gain personal experience, enhance my leadership and management skills, and above all enjoy my summer providing help for our Sanibel Island community.” He is a graduated senior from Cypress Lake High School and Florida Gulf Coast University’s Accelerated College Experience Program. This fall, DiBiase will study at the State University of New York Merchant Maritime College where he will pursue his Bachelor’s Degree in the Science of Marine Transportation as a Naval Sealift Officer.
Garmager joins the city’s Public Works Department where he will work with staff on a traffic study focused on comparing the number of cars that come on island during different temperature ranges, weather conditions, and special events. Garmager, when prompted about why he wanted to work with the city said, “I am exploring the option of whether I would like to pursue private or public environmental engineering. As I move forward in life, I want to get a different feel for all the many aspects of my area of expertise.” He is a Florida Gulf Coast University graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Garmager’s future plans entail earning a Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering.
Goss is spending two weeks with the city as he completes his High School Independent Senior Project. He is shadowing each department over the two week period and has also been tasked with researching legislation and drafting press releases. When asked why he desired to do his project with the city, Goss responded, “I have been studying politics on a national level my entire life, but I felt that the one aspect of governance I have yet to see is on the local level, so when the opportunity arose for me to get involved with the City of Sanibel, I took it.” Goss is a graduating senior at The Canterbury School and will attend Wake Forest University this fall. He is looking to major in Political Science and minor in Business.
