Renovated Captiva Library reopens; work continues on community center

The renovated Captiva Memorial Library is now open for patrons, but construction continues on the Captiva Community Center next door.
The $800,000 project, which adds 1,200 square feet to an existing 7,400, started in the summer of 2012.
Paul Garvey, executive director of the Captiva Civic Association, said the project is progressing and should be done this spring.
“We are still working on the rest of the center and we hope to have it up and running for the first week in March,” said Garvey.
At this point, library patrons are asked to use the side entrance facing the Gulf, but Garvey said the library’s front door should be open in a few weeks. Currently, it’s operating Tuesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but will resume regular hours once the project is complete.
Ann Bradley, a senior librarian, said the upgraded library has a new juvenile room where parents can read with their children, an expanded reading area, and new materials for residents to check out.
The library is open but Bradley said staff is working to reorganize and unpack materials.
