Democratic Club of the Islands meeting to discuss water quality
On Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m., the Democratic Club of the Islands will be meeting at the Sanibel Public Library at 770 Dunlop Road. The meeting is free and open to the public.
Award winning Journalist Roger Williams, who holds a Master’s Degree from Columbia University, will discuss “Voting Water”, or what it takes to make a real change in our current water dilemma. As a weekly columnist for the Florida Weekly, he noted that: “Politicians control the flow of money and voters control the politicians. If we want to clean our water and carry on living like the blessed, we can’t support politicians who don’t show an aggressive willingness to wean ourselves from Big Sugar.” He is careful to point out that as governor, Charlie Crist almost completed a deal that would have sold 700,000-acre Everglades Agricultural Area to the state of Florida and possibly could have saved the Everglades and dramatically improved local and state water systems.
Progressive thinkers, Democrats of all stripes and anyone concerned with the impact of releases from Lake O, is urged to attend and learn more about this issue, and to discover what steps we need to take now. Members of the Democratic Club will be reviewing by-law changes. Those attending who wish to participate more fully in the club’s activities and become members or renew their membership, are reminded that dues are payable at the meeting for $25 per person.
