Diego Corredor of Cape Coral and Julia Wreski of Fort Myers were the overall male and female winners in perfect conditions at Sunday’s Galloway Captiva Triathlon based at South Seas Island Resort.
Rick Hayduk, Wesley Richards and Joe Palmer combined to win the team triathlon relay title for host Team South Seas. Their winning time was 56:45. There were 28 teams competing for the title.
“The event was super fabulous,” said race director Angie Ferguson. “We had pristine, perfect conditions with mostly overcast and a light breeze. We couldn’t have asked for better conditions for the runners.”
Corredor, 32, won his 11th career triathlon title, touring the sprint distance course of a quarter-mile swim, 10-mile bike and finishing 3.1-mile run in a time of 52:41. Wreski, 41, completed the three disciplines in 1:00:28.
Sanibel resident Susan Morehouse, 57, came away with a victory in the women’s 55-59 age division. Mark Thompson, 54, of Sanibel placed second in the men’s 50-54 age group.
With a full field of 750 adult runners, $10,000 was raised to benefit the Community Cooperative Ministries Inc. (CCMI) School Backpack Program. That amount exceeds the $7,500 raised at the inaugural Captiva Triathlon last year, according to Ferguson.
An energetic group of 150 children from age 6-13 competed in two age divisions on Saturday over a 100- or 200-yard swim, 1.5- or 3-mile bike and half- or one-mile run.
“Last year was a great race, and a learning experience,” said Ferguson. “We saw where we could improve some things, like making the transition area run more smoothly by alleviating congestion.”
While most of the action took place on the north end of the island, the Sunday bike course ran the entire length of Captiva Drive, which was closed to traffic from Turner Beach at Blind Pass to the resort. Barricades and safety personnel were on hand to keep athletes and spectators safe.
Ferguson said there were no reported medical emergencies during the event.
“We thank all the island people, police officials and volunteers for their assistance because without them there would be no event,” said Ferguson.
