Weigel’s theme chosen for Chamber magazine cover
As the Director of Marketing for the Sanibel & Captiva Islands Chamber of Commerce, one of Bridgit Stone-Budd’s multitude of tasks includes designing and editing the chamber’s quarterly magazine.
The high-gloss, heavy stock publication includes all of the elements you would expect in every issue: member profiles, visitor statistics, photographic features, a calendar of events and other details of value to residents and visitors to Sanibel and Captiva.
Every issue also includes a theme, selected by Stone-Budd, which is featured on the cover of the magazine. The last edition’s cover, for example, was dubbed “The Real Housewives of Sanibel & Captiva Islands,” spoofing the popular reality TV series.
After Stone-Budd and chamber president Ric Base were invited to speak during Career Day at The Sanibel School last month, the marketing diva decided to put the task of designing the next cover of the magazine into the student’s hands.
“It was a hard decision for me to make,” said Stone-Budd. “I had to go through a large stack of submissions from two eighth grade classes.”
Some of the cover ideas were drawn quite well and included ornate artwork. However, Stone-Budd opted for one of the less intricate submissions, selecting Madi Weigel’s theme, “Sanibel & Captiva Islands: Where All Of Your Worries Wash Away.”
Weigel, who has lived on Sanibel for the past four years, suggested an image that would include her writing the word “WORRIES” along the shoreline, only to have the text washed away by the incoming tide.
“I thought about a theme that would feature the beach,” said Weigel. “Plus, Sanibel is known for relaxing.”
While the original idea to have the word written in the sand didn’t look quite right, Stone-Budd and Weigel came up with an even better notion to spell out their message: Why not write “WORRIES” using shells?
“Luckily for us, there are plenty of shells on the beach,” added Stone-Budd with a laugh.
Both ladies gathered at Algiers Beach last Thursday afternoon, spelled out “WORRIES” along the shoreline, and waited for the incoming tide to wash gently across the sand. Stone-Budd performed the photography duties, while Weigel — and several passers-by — admired the message.
“I just love that we’re surrounded by beaches,” added Weigel. “Sanibel is great because it’s usually not too crowded. And we don’t have any stop lights!”
Stone-Budd reported that the next issue of the chamber magazine will be delivered in mid-April.
