SCCF to conduct trip to Lee County Solid Waste Facility
Just where does your garbage go? Once it leaves your curb, its destination is the Lee County Solid Waste Facility. Here, things are sorted by a variety of means in an elaborate process that recycles the most valuable items in the waste stream and then incinerates the rest. Three hundred tons a day are processed.
The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) is coordinating a trip to the Lee County Waste-to-Energy and Recovered Material Processing Facility on Wednesday, April 27.
The Lee County Solid Waste Facility’s website describes the process:
“The Lee County waste-to-energy plant burns waste at more than 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit, generating up to 53 megawatts of electricity. The facility operates as a zero discharge facility, using recycled waste water from a municipal waste water treatment plant for an additional layer of sustainability.”
This fascinating system is one of the most sophisticated in the country. Remember please register and Solid waste Facility staff must make arrangements in advance of our arrival to accommodate the group.
Join SCCF in a trip to the dump. Closed toe shoes are required to view the tipping floor where trucks deliver items. Participants are asked to sign up by April 22. They have the option of driving to the facility themselves or meeting at SCCF’s parking lot at 8:55 a.m. The tour begins at 10 a.m. at the facility, located at 10500 Buckingham Road.
