Magician Danny Ray will be performing at 7th annual BIG ARTS Family Day.

Master magician Danny Ray is a performing member of the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, Calif. The Magic Castle, once a home built in 1909 by banker and real estate magnate Rolling B. Lane, was transformed into an elegant and private club for magicians. Now, more than four decades after opening its doors, the Castle has also become home to the Academy of Magical Arts, Inc.

Ray, who has been featured in newspapers, on the radio and television, will be bringing his act to Sanibel for BIG ARTS 7th annual Family Day at 3 p.m. Sunday in Boler Garden. All latecomers will be seated at the discretion of management, so be sure to arrive early.

The family day will also include Art by Kids with Cancer in Phillips Gallery, which will be on display through May 25. The Young Artists Awards, a non-profit organization benefiting local students, works with staff in the pediatric, oncology and hematology program at The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida to exhibit and sell artwork of kids with cancer.

Proceeds from the sale of the artwork will provide monetary assistance to families in crisis facing the challenges of childhood cancer. This project is supported in part by Target. Art created by students from Lexington Middle School and Sanibel School will also be exhibited in Phillips Gallery from Sunday through May 25.

Open Doors: Great Expectations exhibit is currently open through May 21 in Founders Gallery. The Open Doors program, funded through donations to the Alliance for the Arts, provides classes for children with artistic talent and financial need.

Congress Jewelers and Pinocchio’s Original Italian Ice Cream are this year’s sponsors, with supporters Green Earth Landscape and Jerry’s Foods of Sanibel make family day possible. There is no charge for any of the day’s activities, including Ray’s magical performance, kids crafts, art exhibits and food. Events will run from 3 to 5 p.m.

Visual Arts Patron Season Sponsors June Rosner and Russ Bilgore are sponsoring Phillips Gallery, while Visual Arts Season sponsors Deborah and John L Gorce supports Founders Gallery.
