ABWA Poker Pedal returns Sunday

Pedal down Periwinkle while playing poker.
During the 9th annual American Business Women’s Association Poker Pedal on Sunday, participants will visit seven out of the 14 business sponsors to collect playing cards for a winning hand. Prizes will be awarded for the best poker hands, such as a week-long stay at an island accommodation, jewelry or a new bicycle.
“No poker experience required,” assured Fay Carney, coordinator of the fundraiser.
Anyone who doesn’t own a bike can rent one for $5 each from Billy’s Rentals. Participants can also drive a car or walk – any mode of transportation is acceptable. The day will begin with registration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Bank of the Islands, where free Poker Pedal T-shirts will be distributed and bottles of water compliments of Billy’s Rentals.
“It is a fun family-friendly event,” said Carney.
The purpose is to raise funds for ABWA’s annual scholarship. It provides at-risk girls from low-income families the opportunity to become college graduates. This year, six Lee County students will receive the four-year scholarship.
Following the Poker Pedal, there will be an after-pedal party held at the Sanibel Community House, 2173 Periwinkle Way, where winners will be announced. In addition, free snacks will be provided, along with a cash bar. A Chinese auction, silent auction and 50/50 raffle will be held, in addition to a loser’s raffle.
For last year’s event, approximately 90 people turned out to pedal in the rain and wind for a good cause.
“We have a very loyal group,” said Carney. “We are hoping for bright sunshine this year.”
Pre-registration is $30 and can be done by calling Carney at 395-1767 or picking up an application at Bank of the Islands, Cottages to Castles, Tom Lauwer’s Tax and Accounting, Three Crafty Ladies and the Island Nutrition Center. Registration can be done the day of the fundraiser at a cost of $35.
This year’s Poker Pedal sponsors are Bank of the Islands and Barrier Island Title Services. All proceeds will benefit ABWA’s scholarship fund.
