A single vehicle crash on the island claimed the life of a driver on Thursday afternoon, a Sanibel Police Department incident detail report released on Friday announced.

According to officials, Officer Shannon Boots was dispatched to the intersection of Rabbit Road and West Gulf Drive at 1:57 p.m. on March 10, in reference to a ingle vehicle traffic crash with possible injuries. Boots arrived on the scene and found a grey Toyota Highlander facing south off the south side of the roadway on West Gulf Drive.

The driver of the vehicle, a white male — whose name has not been released pending notification of the next of kin — was discovered unresponsive. Three bystanders assisted Boots in carrying the victim from the car.

A second officer, Sgt. Dustin Worth, arrived on the scene and assisted Boots in administering CPR. Shortly thereafter, EMS and Sanibel Fire & Rescue District personnel arrived.

The victim was pronounced dead at 2:16 p.m.
