Citizens wanted for Skywarn Storm Spotter Training
The City of Sanibel Emergency Management Office and the National Weather Service will sponsor Skywarn Storm Spotter Training at the Sanibel Recreation Center, located at 3880 Sanibel-Captiva Road.
Daniel Noah, of the National Weather Service in Ruskin, Fla. will train Sanibel residents as Skywarn Storm spotters. Advanced Skywarn training will also be offered.
“Inasmuch as Sanibel is located on a barrier island, it is in the community’s best interest to have as many trained eyes assisting us in identifying severe weather conditions as they approach our town,” said City Manager Judie Zimomra in announcing the Skywarn Storm Spotter Training. “We urge those citizens with an interest in areas such as boating, weather, emergency preparedness and volunteerism to take this training.”
On Tuesday, Feb. 8, Basic Skywarn Training will be offered at 2:30 p.m. while Advanced Skywarn Training has been scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
The Basic training will focus on weather safety, thunderstorm formation, severe weather cloud identification and reporting.
The Advanced training will feature a discussion on sea breeze fronts, lighting patterns, visualizing instability and hurricanes.
To register for one or both training session(s), please contact the Sanibel Recreation Center at 472-0345, or register in person at the Rec Center, 3880 Sanibel-Captiva Road.
Skywarn is a national program developed to assist in reducing the threat of severe weather. The program is a partnership between the National Weather Service and the City of Sanibel. The most important element in the program is a network of volunteers “storm spotters” who relay reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service.
Skywarn Storm Spotters aid in providing the citizens of their community with potentially life-saving information.
