Captivans better start limbering up those paddle-raising arms!

The Captiva Civic Association’s annual ABC Sale dinner and auction is fast approaching, and several local artists are hard at work decorating and designing the ever popular art item for this year’s auction.

The local artists who will be working on this year’s ABC art project are Sue Sherlock, the Crafty Ladies of Sunset Captiva, Jan Markle, Susan Scott and Sharon Brace.

“The original art item we did in 2003 was serving trays. We were all blown away by how well it did, and it was such a success that we have repeated it every year since,” Brace said. “It’s always a popular part of the ABC Sale and it’s really a showcase for local artists.”

Past ABC Sale art items included tables, chests, totem poles, bookshelves and, last year, chairs, all decorated by island artists who donate their time and talents help the CCA.

And while past items have always been rather large, though functional, pieces of furniture, this year, the CCA decided to do something a bit different.

“We thought of mirrors,” Brace said, “because we’ve always had furniture in the past, and we wanted to create something that hangs on the wall rather than taking up floor space. I think it’ll be a good item this year.”

There are three different types of mirrors — square, round and rectangular — surrounded by a large frame, that each artist or group of artists will decorate.

The 45th annual ABC Sale dinner and auction will take place on Saturday, March 12.
