SCCF, Captiva Cruises team up for special voyage
The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) and Captiva Cruises are partnering on a special voyage, entitled “River Meets The Sea: The Cradle of Life!” The cruise will depart from Sanibel Harbor Marriott Resort & Spa in Fort Myers at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 17.
The newest cooperative endeavor between SCCF and Captiva Cruises is a hands-on cruise to explore the mouth of the Caloosahatchee and its estuary. Passengers will be conducting their own water sampling while traveling through the extraordinary back bay waters.
SCCF’s River Estuary Coastal Observing Network (RECON) program, which tracks key water quality parameters from Lake Okeechobee to the Gulf of Mexico, is located nearby. We will discuss our linkage to the greater Everglades Ecosystem, which includes the entire watershed from Orlando to Florida Bay and everything in between.
This cruise will be led by Kristie Anders, SCCF Education Director, and Richard Finkel, Captiva Cruises’ Environmental Educator. Cost is $35 for adults and $20 for children. Proceeds from these cruises will help support SCCF’s Education Fund.

Winter Solstice & Full Moon Cruise
Flute music will fill the air while the moon and stars paint the night sky during a Captiva Cruises voyage on Tuesday, Dec. 21, the winter solstice.
This special cruise will benefit the Randell Research Center (RRC), which maintains the Calusa Heritage Trail around the 200-acre internationally important archeological site on Pine Island, and is dedicated to learning and teaching the archeology, history and ecology of Southwest Florida.
Interpretive narratives about the solstice, planets and stars will be interspersed with a performance by Kat Epple, Emmy Award-winning and Grammy-nominated flutist and composer.
Epple has amassed a unique collection of flutes from cultures around the world, which she features in her performances. Her music has been described as celestial, yet earthly, primeval, and innovative. Kat created the music for the Calusa documentary “The Domain of the Calusa” and for the dance performance “Calusa” with the David Parsons Dance Company.
Complimenting Epple’s performance will be information about the solstice, celestial facts, and identification of night sky features, provided by Richard Finkel, Environmental Educator with Captiva Cruises.
Guests will depart aboard the Lady Chadwick from McCarthy’s Marina on Captiva at 7:30 p.m., cruise the waters of Pine Island Sound, and return to the dock at 9:30 p.m. The cost of $65 per person includes light hors d’oeuvers, complimentary wine, and a full service cash bar.
