Yacht Club hosts marine weather forecasting program
On Thursday, Nov. 18, the Captiva Island Yacht Club is hosting National Weather Service Meteorologist Todd Barron from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) facility in Ruskin, Fla.
“The yacht club sponsors a public forum on environmental issues twice a year as a part of our lease agreement with the Department of Natural Resources for the dock facilities that we have constructed,” said Ed Stringer, chairman of the CIYC Environmental Awareness Committee. “Because we’re nearing the end hurricane season, we thought that having the basic information about weather forecasting and hurricanes would be beneficial to the community,” Stringer said. “I’m also hoping that we can get some discussion going about the residual effects from the oil spill and how it will affect the gulf long term as a whole, because NOAA was the lead research and reporting facility for the spill. Todd’s observations from a NOAA standpoint would be fascinating.”
The program begins at 11 a.m. at the Captiva Island Yacht Club, located at 15903 Captiva Drive.
“We’re open to anybody whose interested — and we hope a lot of people will be interested. I think it’s going to be a terrific program,” Stringer said.
The program is free and open to the public.
