Evans to address Sanibel and Captiva gardeners
The 47th Master Gardeners Lecture Series will be held on Thursday, Dec. 2 starting at 10 a.m. at the Sanibel Public Library, located at 770 Dunlop Road.
Jenny Evans, manager of SCCF’s Native Plant Nursery, will present a program titled “Will the REAL native plant please stand up?”
In some cases such as porterweed or inkberry (scaevola), there is a true native variety and a non-native type. In other cases, a tree (Black olive or Gieger) or a shrub (Dwarf firebush, Yellow elder) have been “decommisioned.” In other words, they are no longer considered native.
When you purchase from the SCCF’s Native Plant Nursery, you will be assured that your plant material is certified native. A native plant is genetically evolved to withstand our climate, soil and weather and produce the habitat and nutrition necessary to our permanent and migratory wildlife on Sanibel.
SCCF’s Native Plant Nursey is the oldest native nursery in Florida and will soon celebrate it’s 32nd anniversary. Evans has significantly increased the number of less-known native plants, many which have interesting flowers or berries rarely seen on Sanibel. These “new natives” will add diversity and interest to your yard. Jenny is en energetic, articulate and knowledgeable professional with advanced degrees, a strong scientific background and a wealth of practical knowledge of Sanibel’s ecology.
In addition, Evans has written informative colums in the local newspaper, is a consultant to The Periwinkle Partnership, leads an internship for college students and partners with Sanibel’s Department of Natural Resources. She will bring specimens and PowerPoint to compliment her presentation.
This Master Gardeners event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, so arriving early is suggested.
