‘Celebrate Sanibel’ schedule of activities announced
The Sanibel Historical Museum & Village and the Committee of the Islands are hosting “Celebrate Sanibel” for the third consecutive year during the week of Nov. 7-12, 2010.
The keynote event is the Annual Island Club/Organization presentation to the public on Sunday, Nov. 7, from noon to 3 p.m. with special guest speaker Charles LeBuff discussing “My Life on Sanybel” from 1 to 2 p.m. Free sandwiches and iced tea will be available after the talk. This takes place at the historic Sanibel Community Center, located at 2173 Periwinkle Way. To date, 16 clubs and organizations have signed on, and more are expected to follow.
On Monday, Nov. 8, tours offered by Tarpon Bay Explorers are available to island residents at 50 percent off the regular rate. Call 472-8900 for more details and reservations.
Also on Monday, free family presentations will be available at the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge’s education center, including “Birds Of The Refuge” at 11 a.m. and “Endangered Species” at 2 p.m.
At BIG Arts, a Current Events presentation will be offered starting at 3 p.m. on Monday. Admission is $3 per person.
On Tuesday, Nov. 9, the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation will host a free talk with Kristie Anders about The History of Conservation on Sanibel. This program will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the SCCF Nature Center, located at 3333 Sanibel-Captiva Road. This program will also be repeated on Nov. 10 at 9:30 a.m.
Also on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum starting at 2 p.m., a free talk with museum director Dr. Jose Leal about the 15th birthday of the Shell Museum is being offered.
That same day at the Sanibel Historical Museum & Village (950 Dunlop Road) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the San-Cap Art League will display Sanibel paintings at the museum’s historic schoolhouse. The display will remain open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 11 and 12.
On Thursday, Nov. 11 at the Sanibel Historical Museum & Village, a free talk about the events leading up to the formation of the City of Sanibel (circa 1958 through 1974) by Alex Werner, museum president, begins at 10 a.m.
At the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW), a special presentation in the Visitors Education Center will start at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11. CROW is located at 3883 Sanibel-Captiva Road.
That evening beginning at 7 p.m. “A Celebration of Former Sanibel Mayors,” a live presentation and filmed documentary by Rusty Farst, will debut at BIG Arts, located at 900 Dunlop Road.
On Friday, Nov. 12, a free tour of Sanibel Moorings Botanical Garden (limited to 20 participants) will start at 9 a.m. To RSVP, call 472-4119. Advanced reservations only, no walk ups.
Lunch at Casa Ybel Resort, on the picnic grounds underneath a tent, will include a 1930’s-style menu of island favorites. The picnic will run from 11:45 a.m. until 2 p.m. Price: TBA.
Also on Friday, Community Housing Resources (CHR) will offer a program at the Sanibel Public Library (770 Dunlop Road) from noon to 2 p.m.

This annual “happening” salutes the City of Sanibel’s incorporation in 1974 and its continuing commitment to nurturing the non-profit groups and organizations serving Sanibel residents and visitors.
