The theme for the Lee County Library System’s 2010 summer reading program is all about diving into reading.

The Captiva Memorial Library is bringing several LCLS “Make a Splash” to the island and offering young people many chances to win prizes and participate in unique programs.

“Each kid who participates will receive a bag to use for the whole summer — including a pencil for their reading log,” said library associate Naomi Pastor.

“When they read each day, they write down what they’ve read and when they’ve filled up one week, they get a sticker. When they fill up the whole thing, they can turn it in for a prize,” Pastor said, noting that children will be able to choose their reward from a large basket filled with toys or possibly receive a free book.

But it’s not just reading that will win youngsters prizes.

At every summer program at the library, children will have an opportunity to win even more prizes by entering their names in a drawing after answering questions that test their library skills.

The first program in the “Make a Splash” line-up, taking place on Thursday, June 24 at 3 p.m., is Balloon Sculptures, presented by Showtime for Kids.

“They’re going to teach you how to make your own balloon sculptures. It’s going to be very hands on,” Pastor said.

Other upcoming programs for children include:

• Sea Creatures of Southwest Florida

Presented by the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge

Thursday, July 1 at 3 p.m.

•Make a Splash with Ocean Plates

Presented by the Alliance for the Arts

•Under the Sea Magic Show

The programs are free to attend, but tickets are required. Free tickets are available at the library a week before the scheduled event.

The library hasn’t forgotten about teens either.

Just like last year, island teenagers can participate in the LCLS “Read It! Watch It! Win It!” program by reading a book or watching a movie and then writing up a review and submitting it to the library. All reviews must be submitted by July 29.

For each submission, the reviewer will receive three “Teen Bucks” which can be used to bid on items such as gift cards from Target and The Gap at the End of Summer Party and Auction on Saturday, July 31 at 2 p.m. Any “Teen Bucks” left over after the party can be used to pay down library fines until Aug. 31.

Teens can also earn “Teen Bucks” by attending programs at the library.

On Saturday, July 10 at 3 p.m., teens can create tropical angel fish with Papier Mache artists DiVitto and Andrea Kelly.

On Saturday, July 31 at 2 p.m., teens can join author, singer and songwriter Darrell House for original stories, songs, poems and fun.

“It’s really hot out there during the summer afternoons, so come inside where it’s air conditioned and read a good book or enjoy fun activity,” Pastor said.
