CCA elects board of governors; celebrates success of ABC Sale
During the Captiva Civic Association general membership business meeting on Wednesday, members of the CCA voted in the board of governors election and heard a recap of the association’s 44th annual ABC Sale.
CCA President Tobe Deutschmann addressed members about how grateful he is to have served on the board of governors over the past two years before beginning the meeting.
“I am pleased to be a participant in the process that has created the new CCA Foundation, which is a 501(c)3 organization, and although it’s still in a nascent state, it’s going to enhance our ability to assist worthy causes in and around the island and maintain our voice on the island,” Deutschmann said, noting that the next board of governors meeting would bring his run as president of the CCA to an end.
“I want to thank my fellow governors for their support, their patience and their advice over the past two years. It’s been great. It’s been my pleasure to serve with people who really care about Captiva and their neighbors,” Deutschmann said.
CCA member Bill Fenniman later thanked Deutschmann for all of his hard work and dedication, an announcement that was met with a round of applause from members.
Fenniman also gave members a recap of the ABC Sale that was held on March 6 at the Sanctuary Golf Club, congratulating Deutschmann on the hard work he and the committee, including event chairman Sue Sherlock, put into making the event a success.
“In my personal opinion, you came out a real winner, and I congratulate you. It was a great dinner, delicious food, the open bar was taken advantage of by many people – there were over 64 bottles of wine opened,” Fenniman said, drawing laughs from the crowd.
“We had 128 reservations and the 22 auction items brought in $47,150,” Fenniman said, noting that while he is a member of the CCA, he is also the president of the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, and accepted a $5,000 donation from the sale’s proceeds to benefit SCCF’s educational programs.
In addition to the money raised by the actual event, the ABC t-shirt and hat sales raised approximately $5,600.
“It goes without saying that we should really thank all the members and non-members and the businesses that contributed to the auction. We should thank the five great artists who spent a lot of time putting the chairs together and all of you for participating in the bidding,” Fenniman said.
After the ABC update, Deutschmann announced that the annual CCA Spring Social will be held on Wednesday, April 7, beginning at 6 p.m.
Members who attend are asked to bring their favorite dish to share.
In addition to the party, Captiva artist and CCA member Stella Farwell will be donating a piece of artwork to the CCA, marked by a dedication ceremony before the social begins.
The election for the board of governors followed, and all candidates were elected unanimously: Shirley Stanton for a first term; Janey Symington, Ted Sawyer and Tom Loomis for a second term and Bill Downey for a third term.
The meeting was followed by a guest presentation by Bill Fellows of Friends in Service Here (F.I.S.H.) of Sanibel.
