Sanibel issues severe thunderstorm watch on Friday

1 min read

At 2:37 p.m. Friday, the City of Sanibel issued the following weather alert:

A severe thunderstorm watch is now in effect for the entire area until 10 p.m. Winds ahead of this cluster of storms are intensifying, allowing for possible severe downdraft bursts of wind, in excess of 60 mph.

Storms are moving in. Within the next hour or so, torrential rain is possible accompanied by gusty winds of 20 to 30 mph. This is associated with a large cluster of rain and embedded thunder ahead of a cold front. The cold front will sweep across the area late this evening ending the rainfall.

Winds will be southerly ahead of the front this evening 20 mph with gusts over 30 mph. They will become northwesterly behind the front and through Saturday morning until subsiding in the afternoon. A high surf advisory is in effect.

Severe weather is not expected at this time, but gusty winds combined with a 1/2 inch to 1 inch of rain may make it seem worse than it is.

Saturday and Sunday will be sunny and breezy with highs only in the 60s.
