League of Women Voters to discuss Redistricting next week
On Monday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. in Meeting Room #4 of the Sanibel Public Library, the Sanibel MAL Unit of the League of Women Voters (LWV) will present a program on Redistricting.
Redistricting reform has been on the LWV Florida agenda since the 1980s. This January Redistricting Amendments #5 and #6 qualified to make the November 2010 ballot. With Florida voter approval in November, these amendments will finally create fair and clear rules for drawing legislative and Congressional districts.
The speaker will be Caroline Emmons-Schramm, League of Women Voters of Florida (LWVF) President from 2003-2005. She currently represents LWVF on the Steering Committee of Fair Districts Florida, a non-partisan coalition, which is working to establish standards for drawing voting districts in the Florida Constitution by citizen initiative.
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
Membership is open to all U.S. citizens and men are welcome. Associate membership is also available and Sanibel residency is not a requirement. For more information, send an e-mail to sanibellwv@gmail.com.
