Third public workshop for Alternative Transportation Study today
On Thursday, April 16 at the Sanibel Community House, located at 2173 Periwinkle Way, the third public workshop for the Alternative Transportation in Parks and Public Lands (ATPPL) study will be held beginning at 4:30 p.m.
This workshop will build upon the public opinions expressed and comments collected at the previous two public workshops. The workshop will start with a short presentation and a question and answer session.
Following the presentation, the attendees will break into small groups for discussion. Participants will be asked to review identified transportation challenges relating to Sanibel Island and J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge and define solutions to these challenges.
Results from Workshop #2 held on April 9, the start of the alternative building process, will also be discussed at Workshop #3.
Alternative transportation evaluated through this project has the purpose of reducing congestion and pollution by reducing automobile dependency, while not harming environmental resources, with particular attention to protecting the environmental carrying capacity for Sanibel’s ecology and beaches. The Refuge, LeeTran and the City of Sanibel desire transportation options that will complement the mission, goals and objectives of the Sanibel Plan and improve transportation conditions and resident/visitor experiences on Sanibel Island.
Regarding the Refuge in particular, options will be identified that improve transportation conditions long-term to serve high-quality visitation at sustainable levels while also improving the ecological integrity of the Refuge.
As the designated recipient of Federal Transit Administration (FTA) funds granted to Lee County, Lee County Transit’s (LeeTran’s) primary role in this Alternative Transportation in Parks and Public Lands (ATPPL) study is to facilitate the planning study at the local level. The County’s desired result of this study is to identify and fund possible alternatives to transportation-related issues identified by the Refuge and the City that are in line with the desires of the community.
