May 5 meeting of CCP to include many topics
The Captiva Community Panel will hold their monthly meeting a week early on Tuesday, May 5, where a variance for the Scott residence will be heard, in addition to further discussion concerning the land development code draft, updates from the CEPD and Captiva Hurricane Response Committee, a golf cart ordinance update and discussion concerning the schedule for review of the panel’s TDC Beach & Shoreline funding request.
Last month, the panel decided to hold off for another month on reviewing and approving the land development code draft before submitting it to the county.
“This meeting should be the final public meeting to review the first round of Captiva-specific language to be included in the county’s Land Development Code,” said panel administrator Ken Gooderham.
According to Gooderham, there won’t be much new material that will be covered during the meeting, unless some additional language is to be offered on mangrove protection or other aspects discussed at prior meetings, but it will be a good opportunity for islanders to ask questions and make suggestions before the draft is submitted to the county for review.
The panel is currently awaiting funding for the second year of their water quality monitoring program and the results of the Tourist Development Council’s May 28 meeting will determine whether the project can continue.
“The water quality monitoring funding request was OK’d by the county’s Coastal Advisory Council at its April 20 meeting, but the real review comes at a special TDC workshop May 28,” Gooderham said. “By then, the TDC should have a better sense of how much revenue will be coming in from the bed tax for the Beach & Shoreline Fund, and how big the shortfall will be between the $6.58 million in funding requests for [fiscal year] 2009-2010 and actual funds to pay for them.”
“It’s expected that bed tax revenues will be down and, with the change to pay for the proposed Red Sox stadium, the percentage allocated to the Beach & Shoreline Fund dropped from 33 percent to 26.4 percent,” he added. “This almost guarantees there won’t be enough money to cover all requests and the TDC will have to decide who does and doesn’t get funded at its May 28 meeting.”
