Sanibel Emergency Response Team begins 10-week CERT course
The Sanibel Emergency Response Team (SERT) is seeking new members to join the team.
The SERT is part of a nationally-recognized organization known as “Community Emergency Response Teams” (CERT). These teams assist the local authorities when a disaster strikes the community. The team members are trained to prepare for and respond to a disaster in their neighborhood as well as in the community. The course trains members in aspects of disaster response which includes:
Disaster Preparedness
CERT Organization
Fire Safety
Medical Operations
Damage Assessment
Search & Rescue
The Sanibel Emergency Response Team has recently been established and has more recently graduated its first class of 11 members. The course is held every Wednesday night for 10 consecutive weeks. Each class takes approximately two hours, with the final class simulating a disaster situation that the team members must assess and operate on their own.
The next course will start on April 1 and runs for 10 weeks. The classes are set up such that if for some reason a member cannot make the Wednesday evening class, the same class will be repeated on the following Saturday.
