Panel discusses land use, April fundraiser

3 min read

The Captiva Community Panel held their monthly meeting in the Crow’s Nest lounge at ‘Tween Waters Inn, during which they discussed the ongoing land development code drafting process, the redesign of the panel’s Web site and upcoming fundraiser in April.

The first item on the agenda focused on the drafting process of the Captiva Land Development Code.

Paul Garvey of the Captiva Community Association and Ken Gooderham and Mike Kelly of the panel have been redrafting the document to contain more Captiva specific language, in addition to editing out obsolete or irrelevant items and improving specific sections.

Many panel members agreed that the section pertaining to mangrove protection was not worded strongly enough, while others took issue with another section about signs on the island.

“I’m eager to get this next wave of Land Development Code submitted, but I do think that we need to do significant work on this section,” said panel member Gordon Hullar.

“We’re trying to clean it up. Our attorney said this (section) is just anachronistic and it needs to be completely rewritten,” Garvey explained, noting that he would ask the CCA’s attorney to look through and – hopefully – rewrite the sign section of the code.

“This is an ongoing effort,” Gooderham said. “There’s some more work to be done. Hopefully, we can have this ready to bring back in April.”

Ultimately, the panel agreed that the draft required more revisions, and Garvey and Gooderham agreed to revise the draft and discuss it again with the panel in April.

The panel also briefly discussed their new community Web site, which is still in the construction phase.

“What we’re doing is trying to upgrade the Web site so the organization is a bit more streamlined, add a few features and just make sure everything is in place in the process of switching out webmasters,” Gooderham said, asking the panel for their opinions on the new test site so that work could continue on building and developing content for the new site.

“We’re also trying to do a flash set-up of photos. If you have photos you like that are appropriate to Captiva, send them to us and we’d be happy to credit you and put them on display. Send them to Beth (Oden) or to me,” Gooderham said.

Gooderham’s e-mail address is kengooderham@comcast.net and Oden’s is beth_oden@mycaptiva.info.

Panel member and South Seas Island Resort managing director Rick Hayduk informed those present that on Wednesday, April 8, the panel will be hosting their annual fundraiser at South Seas.

The day-long event, called the “Captiva Food and Travel Festival,” will feature food, games, wine and a live and silent auction with many travel package vacations.

“The event itself will be a $10 adult fee and that will give everyone access to kind of tapas style food from as many of the restaurants as we can get to participate,” said Hayduk.

Admission is $5 for children and a cash bar and $2 carnival games will be available. The silent auction will begin at 10 a.m. in Chadwick Square at South Seas and end at 5 p.m. when the live auction begins.

“The big fundraising piece will be the auctions. Already we’ve got donations. Vacation rentals, cottages, fly-fishing boating trips, surfing lessons and wine dinners,” Hayduk noted.

The next Captiva Community Panel meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 14 at ‘Tween Waters Inn, located at 15951 Captiva Drive, beginning at 9 a.m.
