CCA elects new board, discusses upcoming events

3 min read

The Captiva Civic Association held their monthly membership meeting on Tuesday, where members discussed upcoming CCA activities and events, elected new board members and gave one member a special award in recognition of his dedication to the organization.

Sharon Brace reminded members that there are still commemorative ABC Sale t-shirts left and, if you buy three t-shirts, you will get an additional t-shirt for free.

Brace informed members that the Captiva Island Fire Control District will present a hands on fire extinguisher demonstration on Wednesday, April 1 from 9 to 10 a.m. to instruct Captivans how to properly and safely operate fire extinguishers.

Due to high demand from last month’s session, an additional CPR/AED class will be held on Thursday, April 9 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. You must register for this class in advance as there is a $20 fee for materials. Please contact the Captiva Fire Department at 472-9494 for details.

On Saturday, April 11 at 3 p.m., the Captiva Memorial Library will host a Master of Disaster program, presented by the American Red Cross of Lee County. This program will teach parents and their children how to be prepared for a hurricane.

Also coming up in April is the CCA’s annual Spring Social.

“The Spring Social is going to be on Monday, April 13. It will be the traditional sort of social that we always have, from 6 to 8 p.m. Bring an hors d’oeuvres to share with others [and] we’ll have our usual CCA donation bar,” Brace said.

The Spring Social, according to CCA president Tobe Deutschmann, will double as the venue for April’s monthly membership meeting.

Also on the agenda was a land use committee update from Bill Fenniman.

“The Harbour Pointe situation is still in a state of flux. They are awaiting the permitting process from the Army Corps of Engineers, the Department of Environmental Protection and the Coast Guard. We have voiced our objections to all of those parties,” said Fenniman.

He also updated members as to the status of the new communications tower that is to be built at South Seas Island Resort if the permit is granted.

“The new tower is supposed to be 170 feet high and will improve communications from an emergency standpoint for the fire department and police department,” Fenniman said, noting that the new tower will also provide better coverage for cell phone users.

At last month’s meeting, the nominating committee put forth a list of names for the CCA board.

All of the names we accepted by members at the March meeting. They include Bill Kiser for his first term, Jack Cunningham, Tobe Deutschmann, Jeff Morgan and Debbie Wells for a second term, and Stella Farwell for a third term.

Of special note was the unannounced presentation of a special award to an important very dedicated member of the CCA.

“The CCA owes an immeasurable debt of gratitude to Bill Fenniman,” said Deutschmann, as he presented Fenniman with a token of appreciation with an inscription thanking him for his “many years of exemplary leadership, dedication, optimism and fortitude.”

Deutschmann also announced that the CCA Foundation has received approval from the State of Florida and has only a few more hurdles to get over before becoming official.
