Upcoming ABC Sale will feature special items by local artists
The 43rd Annual Captiva Civic Association ABC Auction will feature four Brazilian pine bookcases as this year’s exclusively hand-decorated auction items.
The bookcases measure about 33 inches in height, 26 inches in width and 11 inches in depth. Each bookcase will be hand-painted by talented Captiva artisans.
Though the locally-decorated items have only been a part of the ABC Auction for six out of the 43 years of the event’s history, they’ve become a well-liked and much anticipated fixture of the event.
“The art project started in 2003 as serving trays, and it was so so popular and such a successful part of the ABC sale that we continued it,” said CCA member Sharon Brace.
In years since, items have included hand-painted adirondack chairs, small side tables, totem poles and storage chests.
“In 2005, we didn’t have an art project per se, it was the ‘blue tarp’ party because it was after the hurricane and so people did ‘tarp art’ – but that was just for fun and for display,” Brace recalled.
There will be approximately 15 items for sale this year, including the four special bookcases.
“We have four artists lined up for our annual event. The artists this year are Jan Markle, I’ll be doing one, the Crafty Ladies of Sunset Captiva and Kym Nader from Decorating Den,” said ABC Chairman Sue Sherlock.
As a souvenir for 2009’s ABC event, commemorative T-shirts are still available for purchase.
“T-shirts will be on sale on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays up at the Post Office from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. Please make sure you get one,” Sherlock said.
“One thing that I really would like to emphasize about this auction is that it is an auction and we are going to donate to the SCCF (Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation), but it’s also an opportunity for all of you to get together and have a really good time,” Sherlock explained, noting that space will be limited, so when members receive their invitations, they should R.S.V.P. immediately so they don’t miss out on all the fun.
The ABC Auction will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 14 at the CCA Community Center, located at 11550 Chapin Lane. If you have any questions, please contact the CCA at 472-2111.
