Reflective tape ordered on towers over 75 feet
It’s going to be a little safer for pilots working close to the ground in mosquito patrols, airlifting medical emergencies and covering the beat in television news.
Sanibel City Council at its July 22 public hearing adopted an ordinance that new towers or devices over 75 feet must be covered in reflective tape. Even in blackout, reflective tape allows pilots enough warning to avoid collision. Reflective tape is wrapped at 10 foot intervals to the top of new structures, according to guidelines. Existing structures are not forced to comply with the ordinance, an issue angering pilots often forced to navigate and keep a second eye on wires and electronic towers. Cost is cited as the chief reason for builders refusing to add reflective tape to new and existing structures.
