Sanibel Shell to destroy a car for charity
The ASE-certified mechanics at Sanibel Shell Station service and repair cars so that they run as smoothly as possible. This weekend, however, a car will be destroyed instead.
As part of the Bailey’s Center Merchants’ Association (BCMA) Fourth of July Backyard BBQ, Sanibel Shell will allow people to take a swing at a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier for a $2 donation. The car was donated by the owner of 4M Towing in Fort Myers, and with more than 150,000 miles on it, Sanibel Shell owner Ken Kasten decided to make the car bashing a charitable event.
“All proceeds from the car bashing will benefit island charities,” Kasten said. “It’s a great way to raise money for local causes while having fun, and maybe even letting out some aggression.”
Sanibel Shell will also take donations for guesses on how long the car will run before blowing its engine. A brick will be placed on the gas pedal to keep the car “revving” until the engine finally blows.
The formerly white car has been painted beyond recognition. Now covered in neon orange, purple and green paint, Kasten hopes that people will want to try their hand at bashing such an unsightly vehicle.
Sanibel Shell is located at 2435 Periwinkle Way in the Bailey’s Center. For more information, visit www.hillgate.biz/bcma/sanibel-shell-station.
