Sanibel School students get lesson in personal finance
Junior Achievement of Southwest Florida volunteer, board member and Sanibel Island resident Steve Brown, Jr. teaches an Economics for Success class to middle school students at The Sanibel School.
The program, which is held throughout Lee County, educates seventh and eighth graders about personal finance, as well as education and career options based on their skills, interests and values. It also demonstrates the economic benefits of staying in school.
Junior Achievement is the world’s largest organization dedicated to inspiring and preparing young people to succeed in a global economy. Through a dedicated volunteer network, Junior Achievement provides in-school and after-school programs for students which focus on three key content areas: work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy.
During the 2008-09 school year, more than 9,500 students in Lee, Collier and Charlotte counties will be reached. Today, 138 individual area operations reach four million students in the United States, with an additional five million students served by operations in 120 other countries worldwide.

CEO Academy applications still sought
Junior Achievement of Southwest Florida is still accepting applications for the its CEO Academy, an exclusive one-week summer camp for high school students eager learn what it takes to be a successful business leader.
Presented by Junior Achievement of Southwest Florida and the Lutgert College of Business at Florida Gulf Coast University, CEO Academy will take place at the Lutgert College of Business from June 15-19.
CEO Academy is open to high school juniors and seniors from Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties, and allows students to work in project teams with local business leaders and educators. Students will learn about business from these experienced professionals by participating in hands-on activities such as creating business plans and marketing packages based on case studies of specialized international corporations.
Interested students may apply by contacting their school guidance counselor or the Junior Achievement office at 239-225-2590. There is a $100 application fee, which is fully refundable if the student is not selected. Participants will receive a certificate, credentials for college applications and potential internship opportunities. Camp hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Last year, more than 30 Southwest Florida students attended CEO Academy.
