Rec center provides update on activities, events

The Sanibel Recreation Center reported on upcoming programs and activities.

In partnership with Fashion First Workshops, Learn to Sew will be held on Jan. 7 from noon to 2:30 p.m. The workshop will cover sewing basics, fabric selection and pattern making, and stitching and practical skills. The cost is $45 for members and $54 for non-members. Registration is required.

In partnership with Fashion First Workshops, First Stitches will be held on Jan. 7 through Feb. 4 on Wednesdays. Ages 7-10 will meet from 2:30 to 4 p.m., and ages 11 and older will meet from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. The program will teach youths how to use sewing machines, follow patterns and take measurements. At the end, they will walk away with a wearable piece of fashion that they made. The cost is $220 for members and $260 for non-members. Registration is required.

Picture Perfect: 5 Weeks to Better Photos will be held on Jan. 12 at 5 p.m. with Casey Bradley Gent. Attendees will understand the basics of a professional photographer. The class will be on “Picture Perfect Places.” The cost is $90 for members and $110 for non-members for the series or $20 for members and $25 for non-members per class. Registration is required.

Resiliency Cafe with the city’s Resiliency Department will take place on Jan. 13 at 10 a.m.

Get to Know Your Island will be held on Jan. 13 at noon. It will highlight SanCap Resilience. Light refreshments will be served. The program is free and open to the public; registration is required. The speaker series is designed to connect the community with people and organizations that make Sanibel unique. Each program will feature a local business or nonprofit sharing what they do, how the public can get involved and why they are an essential part of island life.

In partnership with Fashion First Workshops, a Sewing Class will be held on Jan. 14 from noon to 2:30 p.m. The topic will be “Sew Your Own Bag.” Attendees will create a shell, yoga or tote bag. The cost is $50 for members and $75 for non-members. Registration is required.

Kids Tumbling with All Out Mobile Training will take place on Jan. 14 through Feb. 4 on Wednesdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. for grades K-3 and from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for grades 4-8. The cost is $60 for members and $85 for non-members for the session or $20 for members and $25 for non-members for a weekly drop-in. Registration is required.

The Spring Softball League is taking team registrations. The games will run from Jan. 14 through March 25. To register or for information, contact Chase Brown at chasen.brown@mysanibel.com.

The center is open on Mondays through Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays from 7 a.m. to5 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Beach parking permits are available for purchase.
